FORD TAKES THE CROWN - THE MOST SUSTAINABLE CAR MANUFACTURER 2024

Electric cars have a distinct advantage over combustion engines in that they do not produce CO₂ emissions while driving. However, the production of vehicles remains associated with high pollutant emissions. Aluminum and steel contribute to substantial greenhouse effects, and the extraction of nickel, cobalt, and lithium raises additional questions about working conditions.

Lead The Charge addresses this issue and checks for environmental and human damages within the supply chains of car manufacturers. In 2024, they examined 18 leading manufacturers more closely. This year’s winner, who ousted Mercedes-Benz from the top spot, is Ford.

Ford scores particularly highly with improvements in supply chains

The evaluation carried out by the consortium of climate, environmental, and human rights organizations, based on official company data and independent certifications, is divided into the areas of climate and environment, human rights, and responsible procurement. The total score is calculated from these categories, with Ford leading at 42 percent. The following spots are occupied by Mercedes-Benz (40 percent) and Tesla (35 percent), ahead of Volvo (32 percent), Stellantis (27 percent), and VW (26 percent). The far-behind tail-enders are BYD (4 percent), GAC (2 percent), and SAIC (1 percent).

Ford can claim victory primarily based on the excellent assessment of their supply chains. In this category, the company clearly leads, with a ten percent lead over second-place Mercedes-Benz.

Companies of global relevance are represented in the ranking

Bob Holycross, Vice President and Environmental Officer of Ford Motor Company, stressed after the announcement of the rankings: "We continue to drive our commitment to a climate-neutral future - our supply chain also plays a crucial role." With this year's victory, Ford is acknowledging the progress it has made in supply chains "for people and the planet".

The scoring criteria have been published by Lead The Charge in a comprehensive overview. This also reveals which car manufacturers are considered in the ranking. These are pure electric car manufacturers and companies that have the highest potential to influence environmental and working conditions due to their size. Last year, this also included Chery and Mitsubishi, who were replaced in the current ranking by Honda and SAIC.
